The Word Bookstore has been a home for readers, writers, and book lovers since 1975. Now the historic building at 469 Milton Street needs us. We're raising $50,000 to restore its facade and keep this community standing for the next 50 years.

our story

The Word Bookstore was founded by Adrian King-Edwards and Lucille Friesen in 1975. They had spent the previous summer hawking paperbacks out of their VW van in Northern British Columbia. Upon returning to Montreal, Lucille taped a photo of George Bernard Shaw to the front window of their apartment on Milton Street and the couple turned their living room into an underground bookstore.
